Experience Meghalaya’s cultural extravaganza at Nongkrem Festival. From children to adults, witness the community coming together to step into a world of colourful attire, sacred traditions, and festive spirit.
Overview
The name “Nongkrem” comes from the village where the festival was originally held—the historic seat of the Khyrim Kingdom.
The Ing Sad is a striking thatched building or palace built entirely without metal– an enduring symbol of Khasi heritage and royal legacy.
The Nongkrem Dance festival is a five-day cultural celebration filled with sacred rituals and community spirit deeply rooted in Khasi tradition.
A key ritual is Ka Pomblang Nongkrem, which literally means Goat killing ceremony of Nongkrem.
On the fourth day, young Khasi men and unmarried women, dressed in traditional attire and gold ornaments, perform a graceful ritual dance in front of the Ing Sad.
