Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum

Where Meghalaya's heritage comes alive through objects, stories and participation

The Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum is an institution under the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, dedicated to preserving, documenting, researching, promoting and developing the arts and culture of Meghalaya. The newly opened museum building has been curated by the Northeast India AV Archive and places the relationship between visitors and objects at the heart of the museum experience. Through sight, sound and direct touch, visitors are encouraged to engage with the exhibits in sensory and participatory ways. The Meghalaya-centric collections belong to communities across the state and carry unique socio-historical, economic, religious and anthropological narratives. By inviting people from within and beyond these communities to interact with the objects, the museum creates a space for plural interpretations and offers a contemporary way of experiencing and understanding Meghalaya's diverse cultural heritage.
