Once part of a colonial trade route, the David Scott Trail is now a trekker's delight—an old stone path that winds through rolling meadows, whispering pine groves, and moss-covered streams. Spanning around 16 km between Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang, it blends history, nature, and local folklore in one scenic journey. Along the way, age-old bridges and ancient monoliths stand as quiet storytellers, making every step feel like a stroll through time.

The trek begins near the Sacred Grove in Mawphlang and ends at Lad Mawphlang, covering a 16 km scenic stretch through valleys and forests.

Located in the East Khasi Hills, the trail starts near Mawphlang, approximately 25 km from Shillong (about a 45-minute drive), and is also accessible from Guwahati via road.

It is advisable to arrange for a local guide or travel companion familiar with the trail, terrain, and language.

Originally built in the 1800s as a mule track during British rule, the trail is one of Meghalaya's oldest colonial routes.
One of the most iconic stops along the trail is an old British-era stone bridge still standing strong over a river bend.
The Umiam river flows through part of the trail; small wooden bridges and stepping stones let you cross while enjoying the sound of flowing water.
The trail passes through open grasslands, pine forests, and shaded groves. The changing landscapes make the 16 km walk feel fresh at every turn.
Several sections of the trail involve walking beside or across clean, gurgling streams.

How to Get There

  • Shared taxis or sumos leave frequently from near Bada Bazaar. Private taxis or hired cars are also easy to arrange from Shillong.
  • The trek begins at the Mawphlang village entrance, marked by a small ticket kiosk and trailhead signboards.
  • The trail begins near the Sacred Grove in Mawphlang and ends at Lad Mawphlang, covering a 16 km stretch through valleys and forests.
  • Joining a local guide is recommended—for navigation, historical insights, and Khasi folklore.
