Overview
The Whistling Village Trek is a short yet immersive journey through some of the hidden wonders of the East Khasi Hills. Over three days, the trail combines steep descents, riverside camps, traditional Khasi villages, dense forests, and the unforgettable musical traditions of Kongthong. The trek begins at Lyndem village with a steep descent to the Wahkarat River, one of the cleanest rivers in the region. Its emerald-blue waters and peaceful riverside surroundings offer a refreshing reward after the challenging climb down. The following day involves a demanding ascent split into two stages. The first climb leads to Mawsohmad, a village that appears untouched by modernity and preserves the traditional lifestyle of rural Meghalaya. From there, trekkers continue upward through lush vegetation filled with fruit and spice trees before finally reaching Kongthong. Kongthong is famous for the tradition of jingrwai ïawbei, meaning the Mother’s Love Song. Each child in the village is given a unique melody composed by their mother instead of simply being called by name. As evening approaches, the entire village fills with these melodic calls as families summon their children home. The trail passes through broom-grass fields, fruit-bearing trees like bananas, pineapples, oranges, and jackfruits, as well as medicinal herbs, bay leaves, and wild mushrooms. Wildlife in the region may include flying squirrels, foxes, barking deer, and clouded leopards. Trekkers should also watch out for the ñiang insect, known for creating quicksand-like traps. Kongthong is also known for its oranges and locally produced honey collected by village beekeepers. Visitors are encouraged to support the local community by purchasing these products. Tourists are not allowed to roam around Kongthong village after 10 PM.
