Overview

The Green River Trek is a short but deeply immersive journey through the waterfalls, forests, rivers, and legends of the Khasi Hills. From dramatic cliffside viewpoints to emerald-green river waters, the trek combines natural beauty, folklore, and adventure into a memorable three-day experience. The trek begins at Kutmadan, a ridge-top village surrounded by some of Meghalaya’s most iconic landmarks. Nearby lies Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres. According to Khasi legend, the falls are named after Ka Likai, a widow driven to despair after discovering that her husband had murdered her daughter in a fit of jealousy. Overcome with grief, she leapt to her death from the cliffs beside the waterfall. Trekkers also visit Ka Khoh Ramhah, a massive rock formation believed to be the overturned basket of a giant who once terrorised the local people. The region also offers spectacular viewpoints overlooking the plains of Bangladesh. From Kutmadan, the trail descends toward the Green River through Sohkhmi village and dense vegetation. The river, known for its clear aquamarine waters, offers opportunities to swim, relax beside the flowing stream, and observe fish visible beneath the crystal-clear surface. The return ascent toward Suktia passes through scenic forest trails and viewpoints before concluding with a drive back to Shillong. The trail passes through broom grass fields, fruit-bearing trees such as bananas, oranges, pineapples, and jackfruits, along with medicinal herbs, wild mushrooms, and bay leaves. Wildlife in the region may include Himalayan yellow-throated martens, large Indian civets, red-vented bulbuls, red-whiskered bulbuls, and red jungle fowl. Suktia is a designated no-tobacco zone, and visitors are requested not to consume tobacco products within the village.

Trail Route Overview

The trek begins at Kutmadan near the famous waterfall viewpoints of Sohra before descending through Sohkhmi toward the Wah Lyngngam River Campsite beside the Green River. The final day involves a gradual ascent to Suktia before returning to Shillong.
