SIJU – A LAND FROZEN IN TIME (The Caves, Rocks & Fossils of Siju)
Discover the mysterious limestone caves, fossilized rocks, and pristine wilderness of Siju — a time capsule of Meghalaya’s geological and natural wonders.
Siju is a small village located between Nongalbibra and Baghmara, the District Headquarter of South Garo Hills. It is best known for the Siju Bat Cave or Dobakkol, one of the longest limestone cave systems in Asia. The cave is motorable up to 50 meters from its entrance and lies just 5 km from Duramong Siju bazaar. Nearby, the famous Dabat Wari lies along the Simsang River, only 150 meters from the cave mouth. Across the river lies the Siju Bird Sanctuary, home to Hornbills and Peacock Pheasants. Trekkers can cross the Siju hanging bridge to explore limestone formations like Goera Ronggat and Goera Rongchang, resembling ancient Angkor Wat ruins. Siju also hosts rich fossil beds featuring ancient marine life impressions. For avid trekkers, a climb to Chitmang Peak (the 2nd highest in Garo Hills) can be arranged via Rongsu village. Siju truly feels like a land frozen in time, preserving stories of prehistoric life and natural beauty.
